A patchy credit file does not automatically rule out a caravan. It does narrow the field, it changes what the application has to prove, and it makes the order you do things in matter a great deal. What follows is an honest account of how caravan finance is assessed when the credit file is not clean, written for people who would rather know where they stand than be told what they want to hear.
What bad credit actually means
Most people who describe themselves as having bad credit have one specific thing on file rather than a general problem. It is worth knowing which, because the lender treats each one differently and the clock on each one runs out at a different time.
- Repayment history is kept for 24 months. It shows whether each monthly payment on a credit account was made on time. A run of recent late payments carries more weight than an old default.
- Defaults stay for 5 years from when they were listed. A default can only be listed once the account is at least 60 days overdue, above a set minimum, and proper notice has been given.
- Credit enquiries stay for 5 years. Every application you make leaves one, whether or not it was approved, which is why applying to several lenders at once does real damage.
- Serious credit infringements stay for 7 years. These are listed where a lender believes someone has tried to avoid their obligations.
- Bankruptcy is listed for 5 years from the date it began, or 2 years from discharge, whichever is later.
If you have not looked at your own file, do that before anything else. Our guide to what is on your credit file and how to read it walks through where to get it and what each entry means. Errors are more common than people expect, and a listing that should not be there is worth more to fix than any amount of preparation.
Can you finance a caravan with bad credit?
Often, yes. The panel of lenders who will look at it is smaller, the application has to be put together properly, and the terms will reflect the risk. But caravans are financeable with impaired credit, and a default from a few years ago on a closed account is a very different conversation from a current arrears balance.
What changes is not whether finance exists. It is how many lenders will consider it, and how much the rest of your position has to carry.
A caravan is judged differently to a work vehicle
This is the part most articles skip, and it is the single biggest reason people are surprised by the answer.
A truck or a work ute earns money. When someone with a damaged credit file applies for truck finance or a business loan, the lender can weigh the income the asset itself will produce, the contracts behind it, and the trading history of the business. The asset is part of the repayment argument.
A caravan produces nothing. It is a lifestyle purchase, and for almost everyone it is a consumer loan governed by the National Consumer Credit Protection Act. That brings responsible lending obligations with it, which means the lender has to be satisfied the repayments fit your actual household budget without substantial hardship. There is no income from the van to help make that case.
The practical consequence: on a caravan, the whole argument rests on you. Your income, your stability, your conduct, your deposit. Nothing about the asset improves the serviceability picture the way a work vehicle can.
What lenders look at besides the credit file
A credit file is one input. These usually matter more:
- Stability. Time in your current job, or time holding your ABN if you are self-employed. Length and consistency count for more than the size of the income.
- Current conduct. Your bank statements for the last few months. Lenders are reading for dishonours, overdrawn accounts, gambling and short-term lending. Recent conduct can outweigh an old listing in either direction.
- Deposit or trade-in. Money in reduces the amount at risk and is the most effective single lever you control.
- Existing commitments. What is already committed each month, including anything on buy now pay later, which lenders do count.
- The reason for the listing. A default caused by a disputed bill, a relationship breakdown or a period of illness, explained and evidenced, reads very differently from a pattern.

The caravan itself still has to pass
Even where you qualify, the van has to be acceptable security.
- Age at the end of the term. Lenders care less about the age today than about how old it will be when the loan finishes. An older van usually means a shorter term.
- Type. Pop-tops, full vans, hybrid and off-road vans, toy haulers and camper trailers are all financeable. Camper trailers and motorhomes and campervans each sit on a slightly different panel, so the right starting point depends on what you are actually buying.
- Private sale or dealer. Both work, but a private sale needs more care. The van has to be checked on the PPSR for money owing and for a write-off or stolen record, and the payout has to be handled properly so the previous debt is cleared. Our guide to buying privately with finance covers the mechanics, which are the same for a van.
- Condition and history. A repairable write-off can sometimes be financed where it is properly registered, but the panel narrows again.
What we will not do
Most articles on this subject recommend adding a guarantor. We do not write personal loans with guarantors, so you will not get that advice here.
It is worth saying why that is not simply a gap. A guarantor puts another person's home or savings behind a lifestyle purchase, and if the loan goes wrong the damage lands on a family member rather than on the borrower. If an application only works with someone else's assets attached to it, our view is that it is better to wait, build a deposit and come back in a stronger position.
How to improve your chances before you apply
- Check and correct your file first. Disputing an incorrect listing costs nothing and can change which lenders will look at you.
- Stop applying. Every enquiry is visible for 5 years, and a cluster of recent ones reads as desperation. This is the most common self-inflicted problem we see.
- Build a deposit. See how deposits work and when you can go without one for what difference it actually makes.
- Clean up the last three months of statements. Dishonours and overdrawn days are the easiest thing to fix and among the most heavily weighted.
- Clear or consolidate small debts. Tidying up a few small commitments can do more for serviceability than a larger deposit. A personal loan is sometimes the right tool for that, sometimes not.
- Wait, where waiting helps. If a default drops off in a few months, waiting is often worth more than anything else on this list.
What to expect if you are approved
Be realistic about the shape of the offer. With an impaired file you should expect the rate to reflect the risk, and you may be asked for a deposit, a shorter term, or both. Some lenders will approve subject to conditions, such as evidence a listed debt has been paid.
None of that is permanent. Conduct on the loan itself builds a new repayment history from the first payment, and after a period of clean conduct refinancing onto better terms is a normal next step. Plenty of clients start on a specialist lender and move within a couple of years.
Where a broker fits
With a clean file you can afford to guess. With an impaired file you cannot, because every wrong guess costs an enquiry that sits on your file for 5 years.
The work is knowing which of the 40+ lenders on our panel will consider your specific situation before anything is submitted, and putting the application in once, to the right one, with the explanation attached. We check your position first, tell you plainly whether it is a yes, a not yet, or a no, and only lodge where there is a realistic prospect. If the answer is not yet, we will tell you what has to change and when to come back.
Getting a sense of your position before you start shopping also helps. Pre-approval works the same way for a caravan as for a car, and knowing your limit before you stand in a dealership is worth a great deal.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get caravan finance with a default on my credit file?
Often yes. It depends on how old the default is, how large it was, whether it has been paid, and what the rest of your position looks like. A paid default from several years ago on a closed account is a very different proposition to a current arrears balance. The panel of lenders who will consider it is smaller, and the application needs to be put to the right one first time.
How long does bad credit affect a caravan application?
It depends what is listed. Repayment history is kept for 24 months, defaults and credit enquiries for 5 years, serious credit infringements for 7 years, and bankruptcy for 5 years from when it began or 2 years from discharge, whichever is later. Recent entries carry much more weight than old ones, so the position usually improves well before anything drops off.
Is caravan finance harder to get than car finance with bad credit?
Usually a little, yes. A caravan is a lifestyle purchase that produces no income, so the whole assessment rests on your household budget and conduct. It is also a larger purchase than many cars, and the resale market is narrower. The same preparation helps in both cases, but the margin for error on a van is smaller.
Do I need a deposit for a caravan loan with bad credit?
Not always, but it helps more than anything else you control. A deposit or a trade-in reduces the amount at risk, which widens the number of lenders who will look at the application and usually improves the terms offered. Where credit is impaired, some lenders will require one.
Will applying to several lenders improve my chances?
No, it does the opposite. Every application leaves an enquiry on your credit file that stays visible for 5 years, and a cluster of recent enquiries is read as a warning sign. This is the most common avoidable mistake we see. One application, to a lender chosen because they will actually consider your situation, is worth far more than several hopeful ones.
Can I refinance later once my credit improves?
Yes, and it is a normal path. Paying a caravan loan on time builds fresh repayment history from the first payment. After a period of clean conduct, and particularly once an old listing has aged or dropped off, refinancing onto better terms is often available. It is worth planning for from the start rather than treating the first loan as permanent.
