If you have started a business and you are wondering when you can borrow against it, the answer comes down almost entirely to one thing: how long you have been trading. Not your idea, not your forecast, not how much you have put in yourself. How many months of real income have gone through the business account.
The good news is that the threshold is lower than most people assume. You do not need years.
How long do you need to be trading?
Across the lenders writing unsecured business lending, the entry points cluster in a fairly narrow band.
| Trading history | What becomes possible |
|---|---|
| Six to twelve months | A meaningful group of lenders is available, and this is where most new businesses first get a genuine yes |
| Roughly three to six months | The earliest lenders come into range, usually with a monthly revenue requirement and case by case |
| Twelve months and beyond | Most of the panel is open, and the tiering starts working in your favour |
| Two years and beyond | The lenders with the strongest terms come into range |
| Day one to roughly three months | No unsecured cash flow lending yet. Asset finance is the route, and it is covered below |
If you are six months in with a clean business account, you are not too early. A lot of people in that position never ask, because the word startup makes them assume the answer is no.
If you have six months or more behind you
This is the point where it is worth a conversation rather than a wait.
Unsecured business lending is assessed mainly on recent bank statements, usually three to six months of them. The lender reads the deposit pattern, the low balances and whether the repayment fits. That is the instrument, and it is why these lenders can decide quickly without full financials.
What they are looking at, set out properly in business loan requirements and eligibility:
- The business account itself. Consistent deposits matter more than large ones. A steady pattern reads better than one good month.
- Dishonours and overdrawn days. These carry real weight and they are the hardest thing to explain away later.
- How long the ABN and the GST registration have each been running. They are tested separately, which catches people out. See below.
- Your own credit file. On a young business the director's position carries more weight than it will later. If there are defaults or judgments already, bad credit business loans covers how differently lenders treat them.
What you will not usually need is full financials, which is the practical difference between this and bank business lending.

If the business is genuinely brand new
Here is the part most pages on this subject will not tell you plainly.
A business with no trading history cannot get an unsecured business cash flow loan. Not because lenders are unwilling, but because the assessment reads bank statements and there are none to read. A forecast is a projection rather than a record, and no amount of presentation substitutes for it.
So if you see a page promising startup loans with no trading history, it is worth asking what product is actually being offered. It is usually either a personal loan in your own name, or an asset-backed facility described loosely.
What you can do from day one is finance an asset. That is a different proposition, because the asset supports the lending rather than the trading history. Several lenders run explicit new-business or day-one pathways, and the common threads are:
- A deposit, or additional security. This is the usual trade for the missing trading history and it is the single biggest factor in whether a day-one application works.
- Evidence of where the work is coming from. A signed contract, a work source letter or a confirmed engagement does a lot here. It is the closest thing to trading history you can offer.
- Industry experience. Someone who has worked in a trade for a decade and has just gone out on their own reads very differently from a career change.
- A clear, specific purpose. Financing a ute for identified work is straightforward. Financing something general is not.
If you need a vehicle, see car loans. If it is equipment, plant or machinery, see equipment finance. Low doc business loans covers the pathway where the asset provides the security and the paperwork is lighter.
The GST trap, and it catches people out
An ABN and a GST registration are two separate registrations and they can have different start dates. Lenders test them separately, and a number test GST tenure rather than ABN age.
That produces a situation worth planning around: a business can hold an ABN for two years and still be assessed at the lowest tier because it only registered for GST recently. If you expect to need finance, registering for GST earlier rather than later can be worth more than it looks, though whether you should register at all is a question for your accountant rather than your broker.
If you trade as a sole trader, ABN and sole trader lending covers how that is assessed, and how your business structure affects finance covers who borrows and who signs.
What to do in your first six months
If finance is coming, these are what make the later application work.
- Run everything through a dedicated business account. Lenders read business statements. Trading mixed through a personal account is the most common reason an otherwise fine application stalls.
- Keep it clean. Dishonours and overdrawn days are read closely.
- Register for GST when it makes sense, and note the date. It starts a clock several lenders care about.
- Do not apply to lenders you do not qualify for. Every application is recorded on your credit file. A run of enquiries in your first months is actively harmful and entirely avoidable.
- Keep the ABN continuous. Several lenders accept ABN continuity when you move from sole trader to a company, which preserves your trading history. Restructuring without regard for that can reset the clock.
What not to do
- Do not take a personal loan to fund the business without understanding the trade. It is often available when business lending is not, but it sits in your own name with your own liability and uses capacity you may want later.
- Do not stack facilities early. Taking a second or third facility in the first year narrows your options considerably. If you are already carrying several, business debt consolidation covers what can be done about it.
- Do not apply broadly hoping one says yes. It is the most damaging thing a new business can do to its own file.
Where a broker fits
Mostly in telling you which of the two situations above you are actually in, and not spending an application finding out. If you have six or twelve months behind you, that is a real conversation now. If you are genuinely at day one, it is working out whether there is an asset-backed route or whether the better move is another quarter of trading and a proper application after it.
If you already took a facility in the early days on terms that reflected the risk at the time, refinancing a business loan is usually worth revisiting once the statements improve, and a line of credit suits recurring gaps better than a term loan.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a business need to be trading to get a loan?
For unsecured business lending the earliest lenders come into range at roughly three to six months, usually with a monthly revenue requirement and case by case. A meaningful group opens up between six and twelve months, and most of the panel at twelve months and beyond. Asset finance can work from day one.
Can I get a business loan for a startup in Australia?
Not an unsecured business cash flow loan with no trading history, because those are assessed on business bank statements and a brand new business has none to show. Asset finance is different, because the asset supports the lending, and several lenders run explicit day-one or new-business pathways.
Can a new ABN get finance?
For asset finance, often yes. Several lenders accept a day-one ABN, generally in exchange for a deposit or additional security, evidence of where the work is coming from, and relevant industry experience. For unsecured cash flow lending a new ABN does not work regardless of how the application is presented.
Do I need to be registered for GST to get business finance?
It depends on the lender and the product, and this catches people out. An ABN and a GST registration are separate registrations with potentially different start dates, and a number of lenders test GST tenure rather than ABN age. A long-held ABN with recent GST registration can still be assessed at the lowest tier.
Should I use a personal loan to fund my new business?
It is often available when business lending is not, but it is worth understanding the trade first. The debt sits in your own name with your own liability, and it uses borrowing capacity you may want later. Whether it makes sense depends on the amount, the purpose and what you expect to need next.
What is the best thing I can do now to get finance later?
Run all business income and expenses through a dedicated business bank account and keep it clean. Lenders read business statements, and trading mixed through a personal account is one of the most common reasons an otherwise reasonable application stalls. Avoiding unnecessary applications matters nearly as much.
