Business debt consolidation means replacing several business debts with a single facility, so there is one repayment instead of four or five. It is usually asked about at the point where the repayments have become hard to track, let alone service.
Two things are worth separating straight away. Whether a lender will do it is mostly a yes. Whether it will help is a different question, and it is the one worth more of your attention.
Can you consolidate business debt in Australia?
With most lenders, yes. Looking across the lenders that write unsecured business lending, the positions fall into three groups.
| Lender position | How common | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Places no restriction on purpose, or names refinance of existing debt as acceptable | The clear majority | Consolidation fits inside a general business purpose. Assessed on your trading, not on the purpose |
| Accepts debt consolidation expressly, with a loading | A small number | Available, and priced for the extra risk the lender is taking on |
| Prohibits consolidation or multiple facilities by name | A minority | Off the table with that lender regardless of how good the file is, so the match matters |
That last group is small but it is absolute. One lender permits refinancing a single existing facility while prohibiting consolidation outright on the same product. Another declines applicants who already hold two or more cash loans, independently of what the money is for.
So the practical answer is that consolidation is placeable through most of the panel, and the work is not persuading a lender to allow it. The work is choosing one that does and presenting the file properly.

The question that matters more
A consolidation that only lowers your monthly repayment has not reduced what you owe. It has spread it over a longer period, which usually increases the total cost even when the pricing improves, because the balance is outstanding for longer.
That can still be the right call. Breathing room has real value when the business is fundamentally sound and the problem is timing. It is the wrong call when the repayments are hard because the business is not generating enough, because then consolidation buys a few months and the same problem returns with a longer loan attached to it.
Being honest with yourself about which of those you are in is the single most useful thing you can do before applying.
When consolidating genuinely helps
- The debts were taken at different times on different terms. A facility taken during a bad quarter is priced for that quarter. If trading has since improved, replacing it on current numbers can be a real gain rather than a shuffle.
- The repayment calendar is the problem. Several facilities on different cycles, some weekly, some fortnightly, creates a cash flow pattern no business can plan around. One repayment on one date is materially easier to manage.
- Administration is costing you. Multiple lenders means multiple direct debits, multiple dishonour risks and multiple relationships. Consolidation genuinely reduces that.
- You want to get back to bank funding. Clearing several non-bank facilities into one, and then servicing it cleanly, is a recognised route back to cheaper lending later.
When it makes things worse
- Nothing has changed except that it hurts. If trading is the same and you are consolidating purely for a lower repayment, you are paying more over a longer period for short-term relief.
- You are planning to keep borrowing. Consolidating and then adding a new facility puts you straight back where you started, with a longer loan underneath it.
- The real problem is a tax debt. ATO debt behaves differently from commercial debt, and whether to move it is its own calculation. We have set that out in an ATO payment plan or a business loan.
- The debts are not actually business debts. Personal debts in your own name are a different product under different rules, covered below.
What lenders look at
Broadly the same ground as any application, set out in business loan requirements and eligibility, with the weight sitting in different places.
Bank statements above everything. Unsecured business lending is assessed mainly on recent trading, usually three to six months. On a consolidation the lender reads the existing repayments, the dishonours and the low balances closely, because they are the evidence of whether the problem is timing or capacity.
How you came to have several facilities. This is the part most applicants under-prepare. A lender reading four facilities wants to know whether they funded four separate opportunities or one slow decline. A clear account of each one changes the assessment.
Conduct on each facility. Clean repayment records are the strongest argument available to you. Arrears across several facilities is the hardest version to place.
Your credit file. Every application is recorded, so applying to several lenders to see who says yes works against you. Our guide to your credit file explains what is recorded and for how long. If there are defaults or judgments already, bad credit business loans covers how differently lenders treat them.
Consolidating is not the same as refinancing one facility
These get used interchangeably and lenders do not treat them the same way. Replacing a single facility is a narrower, easier request and it is accepted almost everywhere, including by lenders that will not consolidate. If you only have one facility to deal with, that is the route, and we have covered it in refinancing a business loan.
If the ongoing need is recurring rather than a fixed amount to clear, a line of credit is a better structural fit than consolidating and then borrowing again.
If the debts are secured against vehicles or equipment
Different product, different assessment. A loan secured against a truck, vehicle or piece of equipment is handled as asset refinancing, where the asset supports the lending. Low doc business loans are assessed on bank statements, BAS or an accountant's declaration with the asset as security.
Mixing secured and unsecured debts into one consolidation request is where applications tend to stall, because no single product covers both well. They are usually better dealt with separately.
If the debts are personal, not business
If what you are carrying is credit cards and personal loans in your own name, that is consumer debt consolidation, which sits under different rules and a different set of lenders. Our honest look at consolidating personal debt covers that instead.
The distinction matters more than it sounds. Business lending is generally outside the National Credit Code, which applies to consumer credit, so the protections that come with a regulated personal loan do not automatically apply to a business facility. Sole traders in particular can end up with debts of both kinds, and if you trade on your own, ABN and sole trader lending covers how that is assessed.
Where a broker fits
Three things. Knowing which lenders will consider consolidation at all, because a minority will not and finding that out by applying is expensive. Presenting the history of each facility so it reads as what it is. And saying plainly when consolidating is not the answer, which happens often enough to matter.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you consolidate business loans in Australia?
With most lenders, yes. The majority of lenders writing unsecured business lending either place no restriction on what the funds are used for, or name refinance of existing business debt as an acceptable purpose. A minority prohibit consolidation by name, so the choice of lender matters more than the request itself.
Is business debt consolidation the same as refinancing a business loan?
No, and lenders treat them differently. Refinancing means replacing one facility with another, which is a narrower request and accepted almost everywhere. Consolidating means rolling several facilities into one, which some lenders prohibit outright even though they allow single refinances.
Does consolidating business debt reduce what I owe?
No. It replaces several debts with one and usually spreads the balance over a longer period, which lowers the repayment but tends to increase the total cost, because the balance is outstanding for longer. The gain is in cash flow and administration, not in the amount owed.
What do lenders want to see for a business debt consolidation?
Recent bank statements first, usually three to six months, because unsecured business lending is assessed mainly on trading. Beyond that, the conduct on each existing facility, payout figures for what is being replaced, ABN and GST details, and a clear explanation of how the facilities came about.
Can I consolidate business debt with a default on my credit file?
Sometimes. Lender positions on adverse credit vary widely, from accepting defaults and judgments with no minimum score through to declining any financial default. Conduct on the facilities you are consolidating usually carries more weight than an older listing, but arrears across several facilities is the hardest situation to place.
Should I consolidate business debt or just keep paying it down?
It depends on whether the difficulty is timing or capacity. If the business is sound and the problem is a repayment calendar that does not match the income, consolidating helps. If the repayments are hard because trading does not support them, consolidating buys a few months and returns the same problem with a longer loan attached.
